Overview
Belavia is the flag carrier airline of Belarus, wholly owned by the Belarusian state. Established in 1996 as a successor to the Byelorussian Civil Aviation Authority, the airline operates from Minsk National Airport and serves destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the CIS.
The airline's international operations were severely curtailed following the forced diversion of a Ryanair flight in May 2021 and the subsequent imposition of sanctions by the European Union and other Western countries, which prohibited Belavia from flying over EU airspace and banned EU carriers from transiting Belarusian airspace.
Despite these restrictions, Belavia has continued to operate, focusing its network on routes to Russia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and destinations accessible without crossing EU airspace, adapting its operations to the significantly changed geopolitical environment.
