Iran Air is the flag carrier of the Islamic Republic of Iran, headquartered in Tehran. Founded in 1944 as Iranian Airways and operating under the Iran Air name since 1962, it is one of the oldest airlines in the Middle East and serves as the primary international carrier representing Iran.
The airline connects Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport with destinations across the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Iran Air's operations have been significantly impacted over the decades by international sanctions, which have restricted its ability to purchase Western aircraft and spare parts, resulting in an ageing and mixed fleet.
Despite operating challenges, Iran Air remains the dominant carrier for international routes to and from Iran, serving a large diaspora population and providing connectivity for trade and tourism. The airline has periodically sought to modernise its fleet during periods of sanction relief.
