Overview
Lion Air, founded in 1999 and headquartered in Jakarta, is Indonesia's largest privately owned airline and one of Southeast Asia's most significant low-cost carriers, dominating the vast Indonesian domestic market.
The Lion Air Group has grown into a regional aviation conglomerate encompassing full-service brand Batik Air, turboprop feeder carrier Wings Air, and international affiliates in Malaysia and Thailand, giving the group combined reach across Southeast Asia.
The airline operates a predominantly Boeing 737 fleet, having placed some of aviation's largest aircraft orders on record, and was among the first carriers to receive the Boeing 737 MAX 8 before the type's global grounding in 2019. Lion Air flight JT610 was involved in a fatal crash in October 2018, prompting significant scrutiny of the MAX and of the airline's safety practices.
Despite controversies, Lion Air remains a dominant force in Indonesian aviation by offering very low fares that have democratised air travel across the archipelago, stimulating passenger growth in one of the world's largest and most geographically dispersed countries.
