South African Airways
Overview
South African Airways (SAA) is the flag carrier and largest airline of South Africa, majority-owned by the South African government. It operates an extensive domestic and international network connecting South Africa to Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Founded in 1934, SAA has long been the dominant force in South African aviation, serving as a key link between sub-Saharan Africa and the rest of the world. The airline is a founding member of the Star Alliance, joining in 2006.
SAA underwent a significant restructuring process after entering business rescue in 2019, emerging with a slimmed-down operation and renewed focus on profitability. The airline restarted operations in 2021 following a period of financial difficulty, with a restructured fleet and route network.
Despite its turbulent recent history, SAA remains an important carrier for intra-African travel and maintains Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport as its primary hub.
