Overview
Etihad Airways is the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates and the national airline of Abu Dhabi, founded in 2003 — younger than its Dubai-based neighbour Emirates but with a distinctly different premium-focused strategy. The carrier operates from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).
The fleet centres on the Boeing 787-9 / 787-10 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350-1000, with the Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A321neo for medium-haul. Etihad retired its Airbus A380 fleet in the early 2020s as it refocused on right-sized wide-bodies.
Etihad is not a member of any of the three major alliances. Instead it operates a series of bilateral codeshare partnerships with American Airlines, Virgin Australia, Air France-KLM, and others to extend reach beyond its Abu Dhabi hub. The carrier has aggressively pursued long-haul premium leisure traffic.
Etihad Guest is the loyalty programme. The airline's flagship "The Residence" — a multi-room private suite on the A380 (and now on selected long-haul aircraft) — set a new benchmark for premium air travel when launched. Business Studio and First Apartment products on the 787 are also industry highlights.
